Roof rats are prolific breeders, with females producing up to five litters per year of five to eight pups each. They cause significant damage by gnawing on electrical wiring, PVC pipes, wood, and insulation. They also contaminate stored food and leave droppings throughout the areas they inhabit. In Hawaii, roof rats are a primary concern for homeowners due to the abundance of fruit trees and tropical vegetation that provides food and harborage.
